Court sends four cyber scammers to Prison in Benin City.
On Friday, July 14, Judge M. Itsueli of the Edo State High Court in Benin City convicted and sentenced two Internet scammers to prison.
Criminals Wisdom Osazuwa No.18 (self-proclaimed tailor) and Oyegun Osadebamwen Godwin (student) were both arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Committee of the Benin Regional Command for one count of illegal possession of fraudulent documents.
After arraignment, the pair pleaded guilty to their respective charges and prosecutor Salihu Ahmed asked the court to convict them and sentence them accordingly.
Judge Itsueli convicted and sentenced Osazuwa and Oyegun to three years in prison or a fine of N200,000 each.
Based on actionable intelligence, criminals were arrested for their involvement in online scams and embarked on a journey to jail. Godwin admitted that he began the cryptocurrency fraud in 2022 and impersonated multiple people online, including Darcy.
In a similar development, on Wednesday, July 12, 24-year-old internet scammer Louis Osadolor was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in prison by Judge C. A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court of Benin. Osadolo was indicted on one count of near-fraudulent impersonation. He was posing as Jucastrotrrafit, a Brazilian woman and bitcoin trader, with the intention of defrauding unsuspecting victims.
The charges against him are as follows: “You, Louis Osadolor, sometime in April 2023, in Ogala, Delta State, within the jurisdiction of this Tribunal, fraudulently sent documents to Eliane Cruz, impersonating a member of the Brazilian Bitcoin Exchange Identity of Jucastrotrraderfit You claim that the above internet files of Jucastrotraderfit are intended to obtain money from unsuspecting victims, thereby contravening Section 22(2) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition and Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 (the following offences) b) (ii) shall be punishable under section 22(2)(b)(IV) of the same Act”.
