Chinese scientists collect modern pollen samples on Mount Everest and create a modern soil pollen database on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Chinese scientists recently collected modern pollen samples on Mount Everest to build a modern soil pollenology database on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Technicians also collected snow and ice samples from the summit of Mount Everest, which will be sent to the Plateau Ice Core Bank in Lhasa.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the largest plateaus in the world, mainly located in western China. The plateau has a major impact on the global climate and environment and is one of the most important alpine formations in the world. Therefore, it is of great significance to the research and protection of the plateau.

Pollen is one of the oldest biomarkers on Earth, and its shape, quantity and distribution can reflect changes in local vegetation, climate and environment. By analyzing pollen samples, scientists can understand the evolution of vegetation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and trends in climate change over the past few thousand years.

In this sampling, scientists used modern pollen collection technology to collect soil and vegetation samples from different regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In addition, they also conducted high-altitude collection on the top of Mount Everest, collecting a large number of ice and snow samples. These samples will be sent to the Plateau Ice Core Bank for preservation and analysis.

The plateau ice core library is an important part of the research on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This ice core library has the world’s largest and most complete plateau ice core samples, which can provide important data support for the study of climate change, glacier change, environmental quality and seismic activity.

With the continuous sampling of Mount Everest and other high mountain areas, the database of the plateau ice core library will become more and more perfect, providing more data support for the research and protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The success of this sampling work has opened up a new path for the research and protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In the future, scientists will continue to study the climate, environment and ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in depth, and provide countries around the world with important data on global climate change.
