Olukoyede confirmed as EFCC chairman, sets new agenda

The Senate on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, confirmed the nominations of Mr. Ola Olukoyede and Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda as Executive Chairman and Secretary of the Commission, respectively, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Their confirmation came after a screening process and they were allowed to speak in the plenary session of the House of Lords. Olukoyede identified three areas of focus and proposed three pretentious individuals as key drivers of his new work. The three focus areas are: focusing on the mandate of the EFCC, pursuing transparency and accountability and shaping the image of Nigeria. To achieve these goals, he repeatedly stressed the need for collective responsibility, a greater focus on anti-corruption prevention frameworks and a strong focus on transactional credit.

“We need to refocus our focus. Section 6 of the EFCC Act sets out what the anti-corruption agency should do. One, I think we should focus on driving the economy. Two, we must also create a transparent and accountable atmosphere and thirdly, we must help build the image of Nigeria as an anti-corruption agency,” he said.

Continuing, “I am also here with three posing people that I want to share with us. The first is the need for collective responsibility. In Nigeria, we need to reach a consensus that corruption is a pest to our development. Olukoyede also said: “It is time that we start thinking more about prevention rather than enforcement. Chukkol asks Nigerian students to develop skills to deal with cyber threats

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulkarim Chukkol, has asked students across the country to develop and utilize emerging cyber trends to combat cyber threats and related crimes.

He made the call on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the National Innovation Presentation Conference in Abuja, organized by the National Association of Computing Students, NACOS, Nile University, Abuja.

The EFCC bosses, represented by the Head of Cybercrime Unit, EFCC Assistant Commander ACE11 Nuru Buhari, spoke on the theme of “Cybersecurity and Cybercrime”, urging students to be on the right side of the law and society, emphasizing that: Criminal behavior There is nowhere to escape.

“Emerging economies have two sides, a good side and a bad side, so you can choose which side to follow, but don’t worry, if you choose the bad side, you will definitely be caught.” That’s too much. It’s too late because crime doesn’t pay,” he said.

NACOS National President Chihumnanya Nwanevu expressed his gratitude to the EFCC Chairman for accepting the invitation and pledged that his colleagues would continue to uphold the right values.

EFCC charges Kaduna man with $800 fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Kaduna Zonal Command arraigned Simon, also known as Ryan Eggold, on October 16, 2023 before Justice A.A Isiaka of the Kaduna State High Court on charges of defrauding an American : Garri Kalish, $800 total ($800 only).

The offense contravenes section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offenses Act 2006 and is punishable under section 1(3) of the Act.

Simon was arraigned on two counts bordering on cyber crimes.

One of the counts reads: “You, Sunday Simon, also known as Ryan Eggold, male, sometime in April 2023, in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of $800 (eight hundred U.S. dollars) from a citizen of the United States of America, Garri Kalish, under the pretext of a romantic relationship, which you knew to be false, and you committed a violation of Penal Code 1( 1 )(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offenses Act 2006 and may be punished under section 1(3) of the Act”.

The suspect has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

In view of his guilty plea, prosecution counsel K. Ogunlade asked the court to fix a trial date and remand the accused to Kaduna Correctional Centre.

Meanwhile, defense lawyer K.S Istifanus made an oral bail application, which was opposed by Ogunlade.

After hearing the two lawyers, Justice Isiaka adjourned the case to October 24, 2023 to hear the bail application before ordering that the defendant be remanded in Kaduna Correctional Centre.

Simon was arrested by operatives of the EFCC Kaduna Area Command during an entrapment operation in Agwa, Trikaniya, Kaduna. During the course of the investigation, his phone was analyzed and different fake Instagram accounts and Facebook accounts were discovered in which he disguised himself as American actor Ryan Egger while chatting with unsuspecting women Germany (Ryan Eggold).
