Yahoo boy with 37 fake email accounts jailed in Port Harcourt
Justice P.I. Ajoku of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers, was convicted and sentenced Silvar Meche Uzoeto, also known as William Parker, to one year’s imprisonment for impersonation and possession of fraudulent documents, contrary to Section 22 (2) ( b) Clause. Section (i) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition, Prevention) Act 2015 and is punishable under the same section of the Act.
He pleaded ‘guilty’ to one count brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Port Harcourt Regional Command (EFCC) and was convicted on Wednesday 13 July 2023.
The charge states: “You, Silvar Meche Uzoeto (aka William Parker), knowingly communicated through your email address williamparker940@gmail Possession in Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this Court, between June 2022 and May 2023.
com with documents containing false pretenses, namely: Sending a photo of a white American: In which you introduce yourself to Jenny Reed as an American citizen named William Parker with the intent of getting you 22 (2 ) (b) (i) punish cybercrime (prohibition, prevention, etc.)”.
In view of the defendant’s “guilty” plea, the prosecution counsel Dr Ben Ubi asked the court to convict the defendant and sentence him accordingly.
Defense lawyer M.M. Suleiman did not oppose the prosecution’s prayers, but urged the court to administer justice in a merciful manner.
Judge Ayoku found the accused guilty and sentenced him to serve a year in a correctional center with the option to deposit it into the Nigerian Federal Government Consolidated Revenue Account.
The judge also ordered the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Redmi 11 and a Dell laptop seized from the criminals to be confiscated to the Nigerian federal government.
Sometime in June 2023, Uzoetto was apprehended by commission agents during a sting operation at the Port Harcourt golf estate in the Rivers state.
Investigations revealed that criminals fell for the dating scam and created thirty-two (32) fake Gmail accounts to conduct dishonest transactions.
