Kwara govt pledges support to EFCC in crackdown on illegal miners

The Kwara state government said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ilorin Regional Command’s decision to crack down on illegal mining activities in the state deserves the support and praise of all citizens.

To that end, it urged the agency not to be intimidated by the antics of some corrupt individuals who benefited from illegal operations, as corruption always strikes back.

This was stated by Mr. Okanlawon Musa Olarewaju, Permanent Secretary for Solid Minerals of the State’s Solid Minerals Development Department, when he led the management of the Ministry in a courtesy call on EFCC Ilorin District Commander Michael Nzekwe.

Mr Okanlawon said the state government supported EFCC’s efforts to clear illegal miners from various locations in the state’s 16 local government areas.

“We are following your activities closely, especially the recent arrests of some Chinese nationals suspected of illegal mining in the state. I almost shed tears when I saw this place. The place is undeveloped, the roads there are impassable and the company is not paying royalties to the government,” the permanent secretary said.

According to him, there are no less than 230 (230) mining operators in Kwara state, but no one has come forward to revalidate their licenses. “We have now asked them to come to the ministry with documents for normalization and revalidation,” he added.

In response, Regional Commander Nzekwe thanked the ministry for its support to EFCC in its fight against corruption, especially the crackdown on illegal mining operators in the state. “EFCC needs the support and cooperation of stakeholders to eradicate corruption in Nigeria,” he said.
