Born in Sa’adatu Aliyu, Kaduna (now Katsina State) in 1943, Barmani Choge ventured into the music industry at the age of 27.

Choge popularized the mature Hausa female music genre called Amada and she is one of the best Hausa female singers in Northern Nigeria.

The Amada centers on five upturned gourds floating on the water, played with by an elderly woman’s hands.

Unafraid of tradition or religion, Choge’s songs address serious social issues, such as the importance of women’s education and women’s small-scale trade, as well as crude topics, such as live-in wives as idle snobs, sexy women’s buttocks wait.

The core message of her songs is that women should stand up and shine in a male-dominated world.

Barmani Choge’s music made women not only dance, but also think about their place in society.

Choge died in 2013 after a long battle with diabetes and paralysis. She was 70 years old at the time. She is survived by 6 children and 60 grandchildren.
