Latest News DSS recharges Emefiele with 20 new offenses

The DSS security agency has dropped charges in the Federal High Court against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele for possessing illegal weapons.

The committee also filed 20 new charges against him in a Lagos court as the hearing continued on Tuesday.

During Tuesday’s court session, the federal government’s lawyer, Bakodo Abubakar, told the judge that the new allegations emerged after the DSS conducted a thorough investigation into Emefiele.

However, the suspect’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu, challenged him, saying the government ignored the court’s order that the judge grant him bail and therefore the court should not hear the government’s request.

Lawyers for the government and DSS told reporters after the court session that the new charges had been lodged with the Abuja High Court.

He added that one of the priorities of Emefiele alleged crimes was a violation of the rules.

Emefile was detained by the National Security Service on June 9 after President Bora Ahmed Tinubu suspended him and ordered an investigation into the allegations against him.

The CBN investigative committee was formed after Tinubu’s suspension, during which the bank released financial reports showing that JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs owed the bank $7.5 billion by the end of 2022.

On July 25, Judge Nicholas Oweibo granted Emerfiel bail at N20 million with two sureties for illegal possession of weapons at his home in Lagos. He should be in jail until he satisfies his bail conditions.

State Security agents grabbed him even harder and took him away before taking him to prison.

FG files to drop gun charges against Emefiele and bring new charges against him

The Federal Government has withdrawn the illegal firearms possession charges brought against Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele in the Lagos Federal High Court.

Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, Prosecutor General of the Federal Department of Justice (DPP), filed an oral application with the Ikoyi Federal High Court to dismiss the charge of illegal possession of firearms.

Defense lawyer Joseph Daudu (SAN) objected, accusing the federal government of violating the court’s original order granting Emefiele bail.

Speaking to reporters after the proceedings, Abubakar said the new charges were filed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. One of the charges accuses Emefile of “providing an unlawful advantage”.
