EFCC arraigns two People in Maiduguri with N1.7m fraud

The Maiduguri Regional Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Muhammad Idris before Maiduguri Borno State High Court Judge Umaru Fadawu on Tuesday, July 18, 2024, for one count of N1 000,000.00 (1,000,000 naira only)

The charge reads as follows: “You, Mohammad Idris, sometime in July 2019, in Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of this Court of Honor, with intent to defraud, Nura Bello Bello obtained a total of 1,000,000.00 Naira (one million naira) as the purchase price of Mercury Chemicals which you knew to be false, in contravention of Section 1(3) of the Advance Payment Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offenses Act 2006 ), the penalty shall be imposed in accordance with the provisions of that Article.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. Accordingly, attorneys for the prosecution A. I Arogha, S. O Saka, V.O Ekenam and A.A Ayenshola asked the court to fix a trial date and remand the accused in prison.

Judge Fadaou remanded the accused in custody and adjourned the case until July 27, 2023.

Similarly, Muhammad Abubakar was arraigned on the revised charge of obtaining N795,000.00 (seventy-ninety-five thousand naira) under false pretenses.

The charge reads as follows: “Muhammad Abubakar, you were in Maiduguri, within the jurisdiction of this Court of Honor, on or about March 12, 2022, with intent to defraud Daniel Yi of N795,000.00 (seventy-ninety-five thousand naira) Brahim, by pretending that you will assist him in finding employment with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), knowing that the pretending is false, is thus in breach of Section 1(1) a of the Advance Fee Fraud Offenses and the Other Fraud Act 2006 Related Offenses Act, punishable under section 1(3) of the Act.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the EFCC.

Prosecution lawyer Ahmedu I. Arogha was also present; S. O Saka, V.O Ekenam and A.A Ayenshola requested the court to remand the accused and fix a trial date.

Judge Fadaou then remanded the accused in custody and postponed the trial until July 31, 2023.
