Kashim Shettima is a Nigerian politician who currently serves as the Vice President of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. He was appointed to the position in 2021, after the resignation of the former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who left to pursue his presidential ambitions. Shettima thus became the first Vice President from the northeastern region of Nigeria, which has been affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and other security challenges.

He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics in the same ministry in 1997. He later served as the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor of Borno State from 1999 to 2003, and then as the Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2009 to 2010.

In 2011, Shettima contested and won the gubernatorial election in Borno State, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was re-elected for a second term in 2015, despite the continuing insurgency and displacement of millions of people in the state. Shettima gained a reputation for his outspokenness and advocacy for the rights of the victims of the conflict, as well as his efforts to rebuild infrastructure and promote education and health care.

As the Vice President of Nigeria, Shettima has pledged to support President Buhari’s agenda of tackling insecurity, corruption, and economic challenges, as well as promoting national unity and development.
