Efforts are being made to reach an agreement between the FG and asuu behind the issues of Salary.

This issue is trying to bring conflict between the teachers’ union and the federal government branch yesterday.

The Federal Government has commenced plans to pay the Congress of University Academics their withheld salaries and rectify the “half salaries” paid to all lecturers under the newly registered union for the month of October 2022, Sunday PUNCH has reliably gathered.

Currently, discussions are continuing between the Union of University Teachers and the federal government branch to reach an agreement on the issue of salaries where the teachers’ union has stated that the administration of President Buhari has promised to give them eight months’ salary but the government is trying to refuse to fulfill the promise.

Sources familiar with the matter made it known to our correspondent on Saturday in Abuja.

The news has spread all over the world that the Union of University Teachers will go on strike from Monday, but currently there is no authoritative source on this matter.

Sunday PUNCH reports that the lecturers under CONUA just like the Academic Staff Union of Universities had their salaries withheld following the invocation of the No-Work-No-Pay policy by the Federal Government during the height of the ASUU strike.

Though the coordinator of CONUA, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, noted that members of CONUA were not on strike, the lecturers still had their salaries withheld.

The new Union of University Teachers has declared that there is no question of strike in its system because it has not been on strike since the beginning.

CONUA, a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff of Universities, was registered in October, 2022 by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Ngige, who spoke during the presentation of certificates to CONUA and another association, the National Association of Medical and Dental Lecturers in Academics, noted the two unions would exist alongside ASUU in the university system.

The minister had also gone ahead to challenge ASUU to move to the court of law if it was displeased with the registration of CONUA and NAMDA.

Following the resumption from the 8-month strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is currently being confronted with judgement debt to the tune of N22.5 billion, making it impossible for its management to power the campus.

Ahmadu Bello University has issued a notice to all its students on the day they return to school to continue their studies, as they need to prepare in a timely manner.

This revelation came to the fore on Friday by the Executive Secretary, the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, during the 2023 budget defence of the commission and all universities before the Joint Senate and House Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND, which was monitored by DAILY POST in Abuja.

Currently, the students of the school are suing the school board for refusing to return to school and continue studying as usual.

To simplify the budget defence process for Federal Universities, the Joint Committee allowed the regulator, NUC, to present the budget on behalf of the universities while the Vice Chancellors listened.

Prof. Rasheed expressed the gratitude of the universities to the legislators on overhead provisions but said the Vice Chancellors wanted him to remind the Senators and honourable members of the serious problem they are facing, especially this year because of the strike for eight months of the academic calendar.
